College coach. Head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne, 1946–1961, record 120-37-7. Head coach at East Carolina, 1962–1969, record 50-27-1. Won nine Carolinas Conference titles at Lenoir-Rhyne and 1960 NAIA national title. Took East Carolina to three bowl games. Athletic director at East Carolina, 1963–1975. One of last coaches to use single-wing offense. Member Helms Foundation Hall of Fame. NAIA National Coach of the Year, 1959. American Football Coaches Association College Coach of the Year, 1964. Graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne, 1935.  Naval officer in World War II. Took part in landings at Tunisia, Sicily, Anzio, and Normandy. Born 1913, Georgetown, Ill. Died 1975.
