Major league pitcher, manager, and executive. Pitched briefly for Brooklyn Dodgers during World War II before returning to minors. Went 18-1 for International League’s Montreal team, 1950. Next season was 14-7 for Brooklyn. Traded to Cincinnati in 1953. Sore arm led to retirement after 1954 season. Major league record 32-25, with 11 saves. Minor league coach and manager and major league coach before becoming manager of San Francisco Giants in 1969. Managed club to 90-72 mark and second-place finish in 1969 NL West race. Fired during 1970 season after 19-25 start. Managed Atlanta, 1974–1975, and New York Yankees, 1982. Career managing record 235-31. Member of Yankees front office. Attended UNC. Born 1925, Goldsboro.  Died 2010.
