Golf and football coach at Duke. Played football at Alabama under Wallace Wade. Followed Wade to Duke as assistant football coach, holding position from 1931 to 1958. Duke’s first full-time golf coach, 1933–1973. Teams compiled dual-match record of 298-85-13. Won 13 SC team titles and five ACC team titles. Teams finished in NCAA Tournament seven times. Best finish was second place, 1947. Learned to play golf in early 1930s. Became top amateur golfer. Member National Collegiate Golf Coaches Hall of Fame. Born Blue Springs, Ala., 1908. Died 1990.
