Major league pitcher. Played for Guilford College, graduating 1912. Pitched for New York Giants, 1912; Boston Red Sox, 1914–1917; and New York Yankees, 1919–1920. Best seasons with Boston, 1914–1917, when he went 58-32. Went 19-8, with 1.65 ERA, 1915. Retired 26 consecutive batters in 1917 game against Washington after relieving starting pitcher Babe Ruth. Won one game in 1915 World Series, two games in 1916 World Series. Sore arm, which he developed while in U.S. Navy, shortened his career. Major league record 65-42. Sheriff of Forsyth County, 1936–1972. Credited as First county sheriff in state to outfit all cars with two-way radios. Born 1891, East Bend. Died 1980, Winston-Salem.
