One of the best pinch hitters in major league history. Played for five major league teams from 1951 through 1967. Batted .295 in 1,718 games, with 126 home runs and 673 runs batted in. Batted .300 or better five times, including a .368 average for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1954. Hit .333 for Pittsburgh in the 1960 World Series, his only appearance in the fall classic. Ranks second behind Manny Mota with 145 major league–career pinch hits and first with 507 career pinch hit–at bats. After retirement served as a scout and batting instructor for the Atlanta Braves. Born 1927 in Caroleen. Died 1991.
