State, 1980–1990. A charismatic, fiery coach, he led “Cardiac Pack” to unexpected 1983 NCAA title. State won 1983 and 1987 ACC titles under Valvano and 1989 regular-season title. ACC Coach of the Year, 1989. Advanced to NCAA Final-Eight, 1985, 1986. Record at State 209-114, overall 346-212. Athletic director at State, 1986–1989. Basketball commentator ABC and ESPN, 1990–1993.
