* John (Buddy) Lewis  1975

A Gastonia native, Lewis briefly attended Wake Forest before signing pro contract in 1934. Made Washington Senators roster in 1935 and spent his entire major league career with that club. Third baseman from 1935 through 1939 season but switched to outfield after leading the AL in errors in three seasons. Batted over .300 on four occasions and scored more than 100 runs four times. For his career Lewis batted .297 and was named to AL all-star team in 1938 and 1947. Led AL with 16 triples in 1939. In July 1937 Lewis had 15 hits in four consecutive games, an AL record. From 1942 to 1944, Lewis was in the U.S. Army Air Corps and flew more than 350 missions in China-Burma-Indian theater. He retired following 1949 season.
