Coach and administrator. Coach at North Carolina Central, 1945–1974. Teams won 30 national titles. Coached numerous all-Americans and Olympians. Head coach 1976 U.S. track and field team. Head coach 1960 Israel and Ethiopia Olympic track teams, and consultant 1968 Trinidad and Kenya Olympic track teams. President U.S. Olympic Committee, 1992–1996. Coached briefly at Benedict College, Bishop College, and Prairie View College before coming to North Carolina. Graduate of Benedict College. Earned master’s degree from Columbia, doctorate from New York University. Top college sprinter. Chancellor, North Carolina Central, 1983–1986.
