College coach. Successful coach at Presbyterian, the Citadel, Florida, and N.C. State, 1952–1989. Played basketball, football, and track at N.C. State, graduating in 1951. Two stops at Florida bracketed tenure at State, 1967–1980. State won 1974 NCAA title in Greensboro with team widely regarded as best in ACC history. State went 57-1 in 1973 and 1974. Won 1970, 1973, 1974 ACC titles. Record at State 266-127. ACC Coach of the Year, 1970, 1973, 1974, National Coach of the Year, 1974. Coached Florida to its first NCAA appearance, 1987. Overall college record 627-395. Coached British National Olympic team, 1980. Fiery coach, dubbed Stormin’ Norman. Born 1926, Anderson, Ind. Died December 9, 2003.
