- Unusual circumstances enabled him to be a star lineman at two schools
- Named All-SC for Wake Forest University in 1942
- Entered Duke University in 1943 to take part in Marine V-12 program
- Played football at Duke, gaining all-American recognition in 1943
- Wounded on Okinawa in 1945
- After completing military service, he played for Chicago Bears from 1946–1949
- Assistant football coach Wake Forest from 1950–1953
- Served as athletic director at Wake Forest from 1954–1955
