Major league player, manager, coach. Attended N.C. State briefly before going pro. Pitched in majors, 1955–1966. Best season was 1959, when he was 11-5 with 2.06 ERA for Los Angeles Dodgers. Pitched for Dodgers in three World Series, going 1-2. Led NL in losses in 1962 and 1963, pitching for expansion New York Mets. Once lost 18 games in a row. Won 1964 World Series game for St. Louis Cardinals. Major league record 74-98. Managed San Diego, 1978–1979, and San Francisco, 1985–1992. Giants won NL West title in 1987 and NL pennant in 1989. Major league record as manager was 959-975. Pitching coach for several teams including 1984 World Series–champion Detroit Tigers. Born in Durham, 1931.
