College basketball player, coach, and administrator. Native of Clinton. Played basketball at Davidson College, 1960–1963. Led NCAA in field goal percentage, 1963. Became men’s head basketball coach at Davidson in 1969–1970 and held that spot five seasons. Coached Davidson to four SC titles. Named SC Coach of the Year three times. Record at Davidson 92-43. Head coach at University of Virginia, 1974–1990. Compiled 326-173 record, more wins than any basketball coach in that school’s history. Coached Virginia to 1981 and 1984 Final Four, 1980 NIT championship, and nine appearances in NCAA Tournament. ACC Coach of the Year, 1981 and 1982. Athletic Director at Davidson, 1990–1995, and at Virginia, 1995–2001.  Currently Athletic Director at East Carolina University.
