Hard-throwing southpaw pitcher for some of the most famous teams in baseball history. Pitched in major leagues in 1943 and 1946–1957, including six seasons with New York Yankees. Went 16-5 for Yankees in 1955, leading AL with .762 winning percentage. Pitched for Yankees in four World Series, losing game seven in 1955 to the Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-0. Ended his career with an 85-69 record. Unusually good hitting pitcher. Compiled .238 lifetime batting average, with 14 home runs. Born in Baltimore, 1919. Came to North Carolina to attend Wake Forest. Retired to town of Wake Forest, where he was mayor for many years. Saw World War II combat duty on destroyer. He died December 20, 2007 in Wake Forest.
