Basketball player, coach, administrator. Raised in Gary, Ind. Attended N.C. State, 1947–1951. Defense-oriented playmaker. Led four SC championship teams. Freshman coach at N.C. State, 1952–1955, varsity assistant, 1956–1959. Named head coach at Duke in May 1959. Compiled outstanding record of 213-67 over 10 seasons. Finished first in regular season play, 1963, 1964, 1965, and 1966. Won ACC Tournaments in 1960, 1963, 1964, and 1966. Advanced to Final Four in 1963, 1964, and 1966, finishing second in 1964, third the other times. ACC Coach of the Year, 1963, 1964, and 1966. Well organized. Innovative recruiter. First man to play and coach in Final Four. Vice president of community relations at Duke, 1974–1976. First commissioner Sunbelt Conference, 1976–1990.
