  • Named head coach at Duke in May 1959 and was known as an innovative recruiter
  • Compiled outstanding record of 213-67 over 10 seasons with the Blue Devils 
  • Finished first in regular season play, 1963, 1964, 1965, and 1966
  • Won ACC tournaments in 1960, 1963, 1964, and 1966
  • Advanced to Final Four in 1963, 1964, and 1966, finishing second in 1964, third the other times
  •  ACC Coach of the Year, 1963, 1964, and 1966
  • First man to play and coach in Final Four
  • Vice president of community relations at Duke from 1974–1976
  • First commissioner of the Sunbelt Conference from 1976–1990
