Professional golfer. Born 1918 in Philadelphia, raised in Durham. Overcame near tragedy to resume career. Attended Duke. Helped team capture four SC team championships while winning two individual titles. Joined PGA tour in 1946. Won three tournaments. Named to 1949 Ryder Cup team. Badly burned in 1950 plane crash. Underwent numerous operations, including 17 skin grafts. Still made 1951 Ryder Cup team, winning only match. Unable to play tour full-time but became top club pro in St. Petersburg, Fla. Won 1959 PGA Club Pro title. Awarded 1959 Ben Hogan Award, for courage, by PGA. Died 1997. |
