Junior Johnson - (1992)

NASCAR driver and owner. Got his start running moonshine near home in Wilkes County. Began racing in the mid-1950s. Won 50 races in career, 13 races in 1965. First racer to win at each of the four original superspeedways: Darlington, Daytona, Charlotte, and Atlanta. Won Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600, 1960. Hard driver. Motto “Go til you blow.” Fan favorite. Became successful stock car owner after retiring in 1966. Immortalized as “The Last American Hero” by Tom Wolfe in 1965 Esquire magazine article. Member Stock Car Hall of Fame. Born 1931, Ingle Hollow.
