Prince Nufer Dixon - (1998)

Backstroke specialist in 1930s and 1940s. Also skilled in freestyle and breaststroke. Began setting girls’ junior records in 1936. Established world record in 50-meter backstroke in 1941. Automobile accident in 1941 hurt career. World War II canceled Olympics in 1940 and 1944, the peak of her career. Attended Woman’s College (now UNC-Greensboro) and UNC. Broke many gender barriers. Native of Goldsboro.
