Successful football coach at UNC, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest. Alabama native, Mississippi State graduate. Head coach at UNC, 1967–1977. Record of 69-53-3, including six bowl games. Won three ACC titles. Team went 11-1 in 1972. Credited with upgrading ACC recruiting. Went to Virginia Tech to become head football coach and athletic director. Compiled 64-37-1 mark in nine seasons. Head coach at Wake Forest, 1987–1992, with 29-35-1 record and one bowl game. ACC Coach of the Year five times. Career record 162-125-5. Former Director of sports development for State of North Carolina. ACC football television analyst. |
