* Gordon Carver - (1992)

Standout athlete at Durham High School and Duke in basketball, football, and track. Basketball guard. One of the top all-around athletes ever to attend Duke University. From 1941-45, he earned nine varsity letters at Duke - four in football, three in basketball and two in track.  All-SC second team in 1943, first team in 1944 and 1945. Football quarterback. All-SC second team in 1943, first team in 1944–1945. Captain of 1944 football team while in medical school. Led Duke to 29-26 victory over Alabama in 1945 Sugar Bowl, school’s first bowl victory. Made several football all-American teams. Ran track for three years and played freshman baseball. Turned down chance to play pro football for internship at Johns Hopkins. Became a prominent surgeon.
