Basketball standout at UNC and in the NBA. Scored 1,863 points at UNC. Named all-ACC in 1977. Helped UNC to second-place finish in 1977 NCAA Tournament. Member of 1976 U.S. Olympic team. Played 15 seasons in NBA for Phoenix, Denver, and Portland. Named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1978. Second-team all-NBA, 1978–1979. Played in six NBA all-star games. Scored 19,521 points in 1,033 pro games, averaging 18.9 points per game. Unusually smooth player. Nicknamed Sweet D. Led South Mecklenburg High School to three state titles. Born 1954, Pineville.
