* Jack Coombs - (1987)

Successful major league pitcher and college coach. Attended Colby College. Pitched for Philadelphia Athletics, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Detroit Tigers, 1906–1920. Went 31-9 in 1910, with 13 shutouts and a 1.30 ERA. Won three games for Philadelphia in 1910 World Series. Led AL with 28 wins in 1911. Also won World Series games in 1911 and 1916 for a career series record of 5-0. Compiled career record of 159-110. Coached at Williams College and Princeton University in 1920s. Became head baseball coach at Duke in 1929, delivering 381-171 record from 1929 to 1952. Duke won six SC titles under Coombs and advanced to the College World Series in 1952. Born 1882 in Iowa.
