* Fred Crawford -
(1964)
Grew up in Waynesville, attended Duke. His father, W. T. Crawford, was a U.S. congressman. A 195-lb. tackle, Crawford gained a reputation for fierceness, unusual quickness, and mobility. Named first-team AP all-American in 1933, the first such honor awarded to a North Carolina collegian. Played for Chicago Bears in 1935. Too small for regular play in interior line, he gave up pro aspirations after single year. Had small roles in several movies before becoming deputy commissioner of Florida Motor Vehicles Division. Died in 1974 at the age of 62. Member of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. |
