Basketball coach at Winston-Salem State, 1947–1993. Second coach to surpass 800 career victories in NCAA competition. His 1967 team, led by Earl Monroe, won NCAA college-division national title, first historically black college to win national basketball title. Captured 11 CIAA titles. Record 828-443.
