College coach. Graduate of East Carolina, 1964. Coach at High Point’s Allen Jay High School and Gibsonville High School. Coach at Elon College, 1971–1975, record 57-19. Head women’s coach at N.C. State, 1975–2009. ACC titles, 1980, 1985, 1987, 1991, with 15 appearances in NCAA Tournament. Advanced to Final Four, 1998. Recorded 680 victories at State, and won 737 games in 38 years of Division 1 coaching career. She is sixth on all-time win list for D-1 women coaches. Extensive international experience as head coach of 1988 U.S. women’s basketball team and assistant coach of 1984 team, both of which won Olympic gold medals. Coached U.S. teams in Goodwill, Pan-American, and World University Games and in World Championships. Member, Women’s Sports Hall of Fame, Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Born Greensboro, 1942, raised in Gibsonville. Died January 24, 2009.
