Major League baseball player. Pitched in majors, 1938–1946, 1949–1953, mostly for St. Louis Cardinals. Won 108 games, lost 82. Second in National League with 1.90 earned run average in 1943. Won games in 1942 and 1944 World Series. Banned briefly from majors for attempting to jump to Mexican League in 1946. Native of Denton.  Died January 2007.
