December 31, 1960 - On this day in history in the NCSHOF, golf great Clayton Heafner died in Charlotte at the age of 46. Heafner won seven tournaments on the PGA Tour and also played on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. He placed second in the 1951 U.S. Open to the immortal Ben Hogan. He was inducted into the NCSHOF in 1974.
