January 7, 2004 - On this day in 2004, long-time coach Russell E. Blunt passed away at the age of 95. He had coached in six different decades and guided Durham's Hillside High to 10 state outdoor track and field championships. He also coached basketball at Hillside. His best known players were All-Americans and NBA players John Lucas and Rodney Rogers. A member of both the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and the National High School Hall of Fame, Blunt was inducted into the NCSHOF in 2007. Duke University's Russell E. Blunt East Coast Invitational is named for the coach.
