February 1, 2004 - On this day in history in the NCSHOF, former Wake Forest star Ricky Proehl grabbed a touchdown pass with 1:04 to play to put the Carolina Panthers in the lead over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII before 71,525 fans in Houston. But the Pats came back and won 32-29 on a last-second field goal. Proehl enjoyed a 17-year playing career in the NFL. He also spent six years on the Panthers coaching staff, first as an offensive assistant and later as WR coach.

Proehl is one of three players to score a super bowl touchdown for two different teams (St. Louis Rams and Carolina), alongside Jerry Rice and fellow Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad.

Ricky Proehl was inducted into the NCSHOF in 2011.
