On this day in history, Forrest “Smoky” Burgess was born in Caroleen, NC.

February 6, 1927 - On this day in history in the NCSHOF, Forrest “Smoky” Burgess was born in Caroleen, NC.  A catcher who was also a prodigious pinch hitter, Burgess spent 18 years as a player in major league baseball for five different teams, including a stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates when they won the 1960 World Series. He was a 9x All-Star, and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1975.

 He was enshrined in the NCSHOF in 1978.
