February 7, 2015 - On this day in history, former University of North Carolina men’s basketball coach Dean Smith passed away in Chapel Hill at the age of 83 after a lingering illness. Smith had a career mark as the UNC head coach of 879-254 at 36 years at the helm and guided the Heels to two NCAA national championships. Smith is immortalized as one of the most influential college basketball coaches of all time.
Smith was best known for running a clean program and having a high graduation rate, with 96.6% of his athletes receiving their degrees.While at North Carolina, Smith helped promote desegregation by recruiting the university's first African-American scholarship basketball player, Charlie Scott, and pushing for equal treatment for African Americans by local businesses.
He was inducted into the NCSHOF in 1981.
