On this day in history, Lee Petty won the inaugural Daytona 500.

February 22, 1959 - On this day in history, Lee Petty won the inaugural Daytona 500 before a crowd of 41,921 in the first race ever at the new Daytona International.  Petty won with an average speed of 135.521 miles per hour. One of stock car’s true pioneers and a three-time Grand National champ, he joined the NCSHOF in 1966.
