March 12, 1977 - On this day in history in the NCSHOF, two teams from the same city—Gastonia--competed for a North Carolina High School Athletic Association state men’s basketball championship, led by two future members of the NCSHOF. Future NBA standout “Sleepy” Floyd led Hunter Huss over future Tar Heel and NBA star James Worthy and Ashbrook 60-59 for the 4-A men’s basketball crown. Ashbrook had beaten its Gastonia rival four times over the course of the season before losing in the title game. Floyd was inducted into the NCSHOF in 2016 while Worthy was inducted in 1997.
