May 1, 1960 - On this day in history in the NCSHOF, Smoky Burgess went three for five at the plate, drove home two runs and scored twice to help his Pittsburgh Pirates roll to a 13-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field. Burgess, a native of Caroleen, is among the all-time MLB leaders in pinch hits. He joined the NCSHOF in 1978.
