Batting in the cleanup spot, he had two hits in three at bats and also walked once, including a double and three runs batted in as the Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Born in Caroleen, Burgess was batting .340 at the end of the day. He joined the NCSHOF in 1978.
