May 30, 1960 - On this day in history in the NCSHOF, Smoky Burgess of the Pittsburgh Pirates went three for four at the plate, scored twice and drove in a run to lift the Pirates to an 8-3 victory over the Milwaukee Braves at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Burgess raised his batting average to .342 with his three hits, and the Pirates went on to win the 1960 World Series in improbable fashion. He joined the NCSHOF in 1978.
