June 5, 1961 - On this day in history in the NCSHOF, Smoky Burgess of the Pittsburgh Pirates went two for four at the plate, including a home run and a pair of runs batted in to lift the Pirates to a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Burgess ripped his homer, his fourth of the year, to left center field and raised his batting average for the season to .340. Burgess played 18 years in the big leagues and was one of the most effective pinch hitters ever, joining the NCSHOF in 1978.
