July 10, 1972 - On this day in history in the NCSHOF, pitcher Hoyt Wilhelm made his final major league appearance with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Born in Huntersville, Wilhelm had a 2.52 earned run average for his MLB career and was the first pitcher to appear in 1,000 games. The eight-time All-Star played for 10 different teams in his career. He joined the NCSHOF in 1968.
