Floyd “Chunk” Simmons finished third in the decathlon to earn a bronze medal in the Olympic Games...

July 26, 1952 - On this day in history in the NCSHOF, Floyd “Chunk” Simmons finished third in the decathlon to earn a bronze medal in the Olympic Games held in Helsinki, Finland.  Bob Mathias of the United States won the gold. Simmons was one of the University of North Carolina’s all-time greats in track.  He was inducted into the NCSHOF in 1973.
