August 5, 1940 - On this day in history in the NCSHOF, Roman Gabriel was born in Wilmington. The second overall pick in the 1962 NFL draft, Gabriel played 17 seasons in the NFL and was the Most Valuable Player in the league in 1969, after a brilliant high school career at New Hanover High and then at N.C. State. He was inducted into the NCSHOF in 1971.
