Paul Gay and Sanford Central - Fifty Years Ago

By Jeff Gravley and Nick Stevens, WRAL, 10/31/18, 2:00PM EDT

"I say that Bear Bryant is the Paul Gay of college football."

Lee County High School's football team is still unbeaten this season. The Yellow Jackets will face county rival Southern Lee High School on Saturday night with first place in the conference on the line.

50 years ago, the team that occupied the same stadium – Sanford Central High School – was also undefeated.

"Friday night in Sanford was about football. It was the place to be on Friday night," Tom Haislip recalled. Haislip was the quarterback for Sanford Central in 1968. "I do think about those nights. I think about the crowd. I think about the band playing and the fight song."

There are a lot of memories from that season. Sanford Central went undefeated in 1966, the team lost twice in 1967, but the 1968 team was special.

"The 1968 team wasn't just undefeated – they were dominant," said Paul Gay, the head coach at Sanford Central.
