Sonny Jurgensen 1971

Born August 23, 1934, in Wilmington. Played quarterback and defensive back for Duke. Hampered by injuries throughout college career. Played 18 seasons in NFL: 1957–1963 for Philadelphia Eagles and 1964–1974 for Washington Redskins. Strong-armed quarterback who set NFL record for passing yards, completions, and touchdown passes in first regular season, 1961. Broke his own marks several times. Led league in passing yards five times. Exceeded 400 yards passing in a single game five times, and threw five touchdown passes in a game twice. Underwent nine operations in pros. Very popular with Washington fans. Completed 2,433 of 4,262 passes, for 32,224 yards, and 255 touchdowns for career. Named to five Pro Bowl squads. Considered by many the finest pure passer in pro football history. Pro Football Hall of Fame.
