Major league player and manager. Played in majors for New York Giants, 1945, 1947–1956, and for four other teams, 1956–1960. Best years with the Giants. Batted .301 in 1949 and just missed the .300 mark in 1950, 1952, and 1953. Played in 1951 and 1954 World Series for Giants. Batted .186 in 10 World Series games. Played in 1952 all-star game. Batted .279 in 1,666 major league games. Hit 114 home runs and drove in 563 runs. Played first base and outfield. Coached for Giants, 1961–1964. Moved to Chicago Cubs organization, 1964. Minor league manager, major league coach, and director of player development for Cubs. Cubs manager, mid-1972 to mid-1974. Record 157-162. Born July 25, 1926, Lowell. Died on March 17, 2009.
